Offseason football withdrawal is real. No red zone panic. No last-second lineup pivots. No needing 18 from your flex and a miracle. Just empty Sundays and replay clips.

If you’re missing football, RetroFantasy is for you.

RetroFantasy takes historical NFL player seasons and drops them into a live multiplayer fantasy game. You’ll draft your team and go head to head against your leaguemates in a 20-to-45-minute season where only one will be crowned champion. You can run it in Classic mode for straight-up weekly outcomes, or try Arcade mode for a more strategy-based game.

Here’s How It Works

In Classic mode, you’ll test your football knowledge. The better you know your football history, the better you’re likely to do. In Arcade mode, football history also matters, but additional game-like features add a strategy component that keeps you coming back. Go through the screenshots below to walk through each component of the game.

Setup and Configuration

Setup and configure your league settings.

Setup is fast and built for offseason group chats. The host can configure season length (8, 12, or 16 weeks), set free agency intervals (every 1, 2, or 4 weeks), pick team count (4 to 12), and choose mode: Classic or Arcade. We recommend starting with an 8-week season with free agency every 2 weeks.

The Draft

RetroFantasy draft screen
The draft screen showing available players and pick timer.

Once everyone joins, it’s draft time. RetroFantasy uses snake order. With 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 FLEX, and 2 bench spots, you get 8 picks. Picks are on a timer, and if you let the clock burn out, the game auto-picks for you with intentionally weaker logic as a penalty. That alone keeps rooms moving and raises the pressure on every pick.

Classic mode: Has two options — show stats or show no stats. You can either inform your draft with every player’s minimum score, median score, or max score for the season, or you can really test your football knowledge and play blind.

Arcade mode: Introduces a point system which gives you a variety of trade-offs — the ability to reveal hidden players or reveal hidden stats. Those decisions matter because points are your all-season currency. Blow too much early, and you’ll feel it when free agency and roll actions start deciding close matchups.

Managing Your Roster

RetroFantasy roster management screen
Your roster view with player scores and weekly rolls.

After the draft, you manage your roster through each week of the season.

Classic mode: Shows each player’s actual week-by-week scores. You see exactly what they put up historically, and you can view your opponent’s roster and recent scores to gauge your matchup.

Arcade mode: Each player gets a weekly roll from 1 to 16. Lower is better — 1 is the player’s best week that season, 16 is their worst. You can spend points to manipulate these rolls — Reroll randomizes completely, Decrease by 3 nudges toward better outcomes.

Matchups and Scoring

Matchups reveal one position at a time — QB, then RB, then WR, then TE, then K, then FLEX, then Bench. You watch your lead grow or shrink as each score drops.

Worth noting: QBs can play in the FLEX position in all modes. If you drafted two elite signal-callers, you can start them both.

After each matchup wraps, you earn income based on your score — higher scores pay more. In Arcade mode, those points fund your next moves. Even if you lose, you still get paid.

Free Agency

Free agency happens at your configured intervals. New players release from a reserve pool each period, like hot waiver pickups appearing mid-season. Turn order goes by worst record first.

Each manager takes turns making moves. You can keep making moves until you opt out. Two consecutive timeouts and you’re auto-opted-out.

Classic mode: Free agency is open. All players are visible, and pickups are free.

Arcade mode: Pickups cost points. You can also add bench spots or add a second FLEX spot if you’ve been saving. Reveal hidden players and stats to scout your options before committing.

Play Your Season

RetroFantasy runs fast. Setup takes a minute. Drafts take ten. Matchups reveal in seconds. Free agency keeps the season dynamic. You’re in and out in under an hour, but you’ll feel every close matchup and every clutch waiver pickup.

Whether you’re replaying 2006 LaDainian Tomlinson’s dominance or accidentally discovering that 2017 Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone in Week 6, your knowledge of football history determines your fate.
